The Idaho potato industry, on the other hand, favors a geographic indicator provision to protect its Idaho potato brand. Idaho Potato Commission CEO Frank Muir said the industry has had to battle companies in Europe over the use of the “Idaho potato” brand.

“We have a worldwide brand and we have to protect it,” he said. “We’re not going to back off. That’s our bread and butter.”

U.S. wheat growers would like to see the agreement result in the EU accepting the use of biotechnology, said Idaho Grain Producers Association Executive Director Travis Jones.
