At present, Uruguay has already overcome 9,000 acres planted throughout the country, with a sustained development that occupies an important place in the production and domestic industry. These plantations are in active expansion, with a growth rate of 500 to 1,000 hectares per year.

The first olive plantations in Uruguay were recorded in the coast of Miguelete stream, in the department of Montevideo, in 1780, belonging to Buenos Aires. In 1937 a law for the promotion of olive growing was adopted, and by 1950 1,000 hectares were already planted in Uruguayan territory, concentrated in the departments of Río Negro, Paysandú, Salto and Montevideo
