The Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policy (MIPAAF) has launched an action plan against Xylella fastidiosa, a harmful bacteria for many crops, including olive, and detected in the Italian province of Lecce (in Apulia region).
As reported in a statement of the Ministry, genetic research, conducted in collaboration with the world’s leading experts in this bacterium have confirmed that the strain recorded in Lecce is considered an atypical variant of pauca subspecies, whose place of origin was identified in Central America. In addition to the olive grove, the presence of Xylella fastidiosa has been observed in other crops such as almond or cherry.
