The European Commission (EC) adopted a communication which encourages member states to seek ways to improve the protection of small food producers and retailers against unfair practices of its trading partners, much stronger in many occasions.

In a statement, the European executive said that due to the higher concentration of the market, there are very different degrees of bargaining power in the relationship between the agents of the food supply chain. “Although differences in bargaining power are common and legitimate in trade relations, these imbalances can lead to unfair trade practices in some cases”, the EC said.

In this regard, the Commissioner for Internal Market and Services, Michel Barnier, is committed to “fair and equitable” conditions of competition between retailers and suppliers of food SMEs and with large multinational manufacturers and supermarket chains.
