PREMIUM olive oil producer Boundary Bend Ltd, one of the biggest success stories of horticulture in north-western Victoria, is eyeing a $10 million expansion into the US market.

The company’s managing director, Rob McGavin, said the US market represented a major opportunity for his company. Boundary Bend already produces more extra-virgin olive oil from its Australian olive groves than all US producers combined.

“There are 350 million people in the US, and they only produce enough olive oil for 10 million consumers,”­ he said.

The US market is currently in a similar position to Australia’s in the 1990s: most of its olive oil is imported from Mediterranean countries like Spain and Italy, is highly processed, and of inferior flavour and quality.
