  • XII International Award for Cuisine paired with Extra Virgin Olive Oil

    The Provincial Council of Jaén has announced the XII International Award for Cuisine paired with Extra Virgin Olive Oil “Jaén Paraiso Interior” to promote the part played by EVOO in the field of gastronomy, stimulating creativity of national and international chefs.

    The purpose of this Award is to highlight the benefits of using Extra Virgin Olive Oil -specially the ones of Jaén- in haute cuisine. As in the previous edition, the event will take place in the framework of Madrid Fusion, to be held in February 2015.

    Participants must submit their homemade recipe obligatorily made with some of the EVOOs members of the last contest “Jaén Selección”. The three finalists will share 12,000 euros in prize money as well as a travel bag of 500 euros to spend in oleotourism actions in the province of Jaén. Thus, the first prize is worth 8,000 euros and a trophy, while the second and third prize winners will receive 3,000 and 1,000 euros, respectively, and a finalist plate.

  • San Sebastian Gastronomika will have Italian flavor

    San Sebastian Gastronomika-Euskadi Basque Country will become once again an essential event in the gastronomic calendar, with the presence of the most representative figures of the global culinary scene and a selection of the best products of the Spanish food industry. The Congress will open its doors this Sunday, October 5th, and Italy will be its honour guest.

    The Kursaal Palace in the city of San Sebastian will host from 5 to 8 October 8 conferences of the best Italian chefs such as Massimiliano Alajmo, Massimo Bottura and Niko Romito, with 3 Michelin Stars each. Carlo Cracco and other figures such as Gennaro Esposito, Davide Scabin, Norbert Niederkofler, Andrea Berton, Nino di Costanzo, Moreno Cedroni, Mauro Uliassi and Pino Cuttaia will also participate.

  • EU Takes Part In Annapoorna Food Festival

    The European Union is participating for the first time in the Annapoorna Food Festival that began on Wednesday at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, Mumbai. The EU has one of the biggest pavilions in this Indian food festival.

    The EU pavilion offers a culinary tour of the region and the diversity of European cuisine. There are interactive sessions to inform and educate consumers on the availability of quality products such as fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, a variety of cheeses and other dairy products, the high-on-demand extra virgin olive oils and wine. There are also live cooking sessions and food tastings by experts to acquaint visitors about best possible ways to use these products.

  • The Olive Industry International Fair in Brazil closes successfully

    The Pucrs Event Center in Porto Alegre (Brazil) welcomed from 2 to 5 September the First International Olive Growing Business Fair which was a “success”, according to its organizers, exceeding all expectations, and attended by researchers, manufacturers, factories, suppliers of machinery and for olive cultivation.

    This Brazilian event was organized by the Association of Olive Growers in Rio Grande (ARGOS) and of the organizing committee highlighted the Spanish experts Marino Uceda Ojeda, olive oil taster and professor at the University of Jaén;

    Sebastián Villasclaras, chemical engineer and teacher of this University; and Juan M. Caballero, international consultant and former head of the Olive Growing Department of the Ifapa Insitute in Córdoba, who received, together with other individuals and organizations, the “Celeste Gobbato” Award, in recognition of his support for the development of olive growing in Brazil.

    In addition to these experts, this event was also attended by the Executive Director of the International Olive Council (IOC), Jean-Louis Barjol; Manuel Parras, rector of the University of Jaén; and Antonio Trapero, professor at the University of Córdoba, as well as many Spanish and Portuguese producers.

  • UK Speciality & Fine Food Fair for the gourmet food industry

    London hosts from yesterday until September 9 the Speciality & Fine Food Fair, the leading trade fair for the gourmet food industry in the UK. This event, held since 1999, will be attended in its 15th edition by artisan and delicatessen food producers and key buyers from retail stores, large chains and the hospitality sector.

    According to its organizers, the show will feature “new and exciting” products developed by more than 700 exhibiting companies and it will bring together more than 11,700 representatives of retailers, caterers, chefs, hoteliers and restaurants and food establishments owners.

    Also “The Great Taste Awards” will be held during the fair, a competition organized by The Guild of Fine Food.

    Argentina will host International Olive Fair Expolivo in September

    The province of Catamarca, located in the north of Argentina, will host Expolivo, the International Olive Fair that will celebrate its seventh edition from 11 to 14 September. The exhibition is organized by the Ministry of Production and Development of the Government of this province and it will contact leading representatives of olive growing with major companies, producers, business associations, traders, professionals and technicians operating in olive areas of Argentine.

    As the organizers reported to Mercacei, Expolivo 2014 will have a particular characteristic, as the traditional complex that exhibits this appointment will be integrated into the framework of Expo Productiva Catamarca 2014, an event “that serves as a springboard for promotion of other industrial, agricultural and agro-industrial activities in the province and in the northwestern region of the country”.

    In this sense, Expolivo and Expo Productiva will be held on the amenities of Predio Ferial Catamarca, site of previous editions of this olive fair.

  • Olive Oil Fairs calendar 2014 - 2015: you can't miss these events!

    We already know the dates of some of the most important national and international trade fairs to be held during 2015. All of them aim to promote the olive heritage of each area, as well as the latest innovations in machinery and scientific progress, and to recognize the effort of quality olive oil producers.

    2015 starts with the Winter Fancy Food Show, which will be held from 11 to 13 January in San Francisco, being an exclusive showcase which will display all types of delicatessen food such as extra virgin olive oil.

    Later on that same month, Milan will host once again Olio Officina Food Festival, a cultural event created by writer and editor of Olio Officina Magazine, Luigi Caricato. The fourth edition of this event will take place from 22 to 24 January in the Palazzo delle Stelline of the Italian city.

    A few days later and this time in the capital of Spain the International Tourism Trade Fair, FITUR, will take place from 28 January to 1 February. This event will become once again a global meeting point for tourism professionals. As every year, FITUR will focuss, among other areas, in the olive grove culture and the excellence of extra virgin olive oil, hosting various promotional activities of this key food of the Mediterranean Diet.

    Subsequently, Madrid Fusion will take place in the same Spanish city. The International Summit of Gastronomy will return to the Congress Palace of Nations between 2 and 4 February, with countless presentations, demonstrations, master workshops, tastings and lectures focussed on the new trends of author cuisine.

    Also in February -after the organization of major events such as Prodexpo (from 9 to 13 February), reference event in the Russian market, and Gulfood (from 8 to 12 February in Dubai), a strategic event for luxury products- BioFach will take place, the world’s largest platform dedicated to the organic sector in the Nuremberg’s Exhibition Centre from 11 to 14 of February.

    Before the end of this month, Feria de Zaragoza will host the International Exhibition of Machinery and Oil Equipment and Packaging, Oleomaq, in its fifth edition between 24 and 27 February, coinciding again with the 5th International Exhibition of Equipment and Techniques for Olive Growing, Oleotec.

    March will be completed with the celebration of Foodex Japan (from days 3 to 6 in Tokyo) and SOL & Agrifood (days 22 to 25 in Verona, Italy); while in Madrid the World Olive Oil Exhibition (days 12 to 13) will take place, an event where major international buyers and olive oil producers will meet. In that same month, there are still dates to confirm of events such as Eleotechnia in Athens (Greece) and Olio Capitale in Trieste (Italy).

    Meanwhile, April will host important international events such Salon de Gourmets (between 13 and 16 in Madrid), the largest annual gathering dedicated to quality products, including extra virgin olive oil; World Food Warsaw (14 to 16), SIAL Canada (from 28 to 30 April), which includes the celebration of the International Competition of Extra Virgin Olive Oil SIAL D’Or Canada; Bta. and Hispack (from 21 to 24 April), in Barcelona; Olivtech (Turkey), Ovibeja (Portugal), SIAM (Morocco) and Alimentaria & Horexpo Lisbon, yet to be confirmed.

    May will also have a strong international focus with interesting exhibitions dedicated to the olive oil sector such as SIAL China (6 to 8) and PLMA (19 to 20). In Spain, Jaen will host once again between days 6 to 9 the XVII edition of Expoliva.

    Also, the summer season will arrive with appointments already confirmed as the Summer Fancy Food Show, which just ended its 2014 edition. Next year it will take place between 28 and 30 June at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. Oils+Fats will also take place from 15 to 17 September in Munich, a professional platform for the oils and fats industry to meet again.

    Second half of 2014

    The olive sector faces the second part of the year with Expoazeite (10 to 11 July) in Sao Paulo (Brazil), and two new appointments in the show calendar: the International Olive Growing Business Fair to be held from 2 to 5 September in Porto Alegre (Brazil), and that expects producers, industries, suppliers of machinery and for the cultivation of olive trees; and Mediterranean Food, the first international trade fair for Mediterranean products, taking place in Düsseldorf from 21 to 23 September.

    Other key trade shows in the last months of the year will be:
    Speciality and Fine Food Fair (7 to 9 September in London);
    – Agricultural Machinery Fair in Úbeda (Jaén), taking place between 11 and 14 September;
    World Food Moscow (from 15 to 18 September);
    San Sebastian Gastronomika – Euskadi Basque Country (5 to 8 October);
    SIAL Paris (from 19 to 23 October);
    – ArgOliva, in Argentina’s province of San Juan (20 to 25 October);
    Salone Internazionale del Gusto (23 to 27 October in Torino, Italy);
    Nordic and Organic Food Fair in Malmoe (Sweden), to be held between 26 and 27 October.

    Also highlight IFEA Africa’s Food & Drink Event, to be held from 5 to 7 November in Johannesburg (South Africa); Food & Hotel China (from 12 to 14 November in Shanghai) and Empack (5 to 6 November in Madrid).

  • World Olive Oil Exhibition prepares 2015

    Featuring a new image, the World Olive Oil Exhibition (WOOE) is already preparing its fourth edition to be held from 12 to 13 March 2015 at IFEMA in Madrid, where major international buyers and quality olive oil producers will meet.

    Organizers have stressed that internationalization will remain a key factor of the WOOE, aspiring to exceed last year’s figures, which recorded 20% more participants that came from 37 countries.

    Also, the event featured 100 mills from regions such as Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia, the Balearic Islands or countries such as Tunisia, which presented its oils to more than 2,000 visitors who attended the fair.

  • Largest Specialty Food and Beverage Event held at New York City

    Extra virgin olive oil producers crossed the ocean once again to attend the Summer Fancy Food Show, held between 29 June and 1 July in New York. Innovative offers, business meetings and the Awards ceremony conducted one of the largest U.S. food fairs.

    The event, organized since 1955 by the Specialty Food Association, takes place twice a year in two forms: Winter Fancy Food in San Francisco, and Summer Fancy Food, held at the Convention Center Jacob K. Javits in the city of skyscrapers.

    The 60th edition of this fair attracted professionals from gourmet shops, retailers, distributors, restaurants and delicatessen stores, featuring 2,730 exhibitors this year, the largest number since the creation of this event, and provided assistance to 24,100 visitors. In addition, about 180,000 culinary specialties and beverages filled every showroom, representing new and original products.

    Business meetings between exhibitors and buyers, workshops, seminars and many more activities played an important role in the Summer Fancy Food program. Some of them even dedicated to olive oil. Thus, under the title What exactly do you need to know about olive oil?, the International Olive Council (IOC) offered a seminar dedicated to this product. At this meeting, the executive director of the agency, Jean-Louis Barjol recalled the definitions of the different olive oil categories, those characteristics that make this product so special, its properties and its versatility in the kitchen; while the executive vice president of the North American Olive Oil Association (NAOOA), Eryn Balch, spoke about What the American consumer really thinks of olive oil.

    In addition, Fitch Learning Center in New York hosted a Seminar on Quality and Intensive Olive Oil Tasting, organized by Extra Virgin Alliance (EVA) and addressed to buyers, food professionals, chefs and extra virgin olive oil lovers. Through this training activity, students learnt the fundamentals of olive oil tasting -in a carefully designed context- from top people working in the olive oil and food industries.

    This year we organize the first Edition of SudOlive Asia, taking advantage of the great success of Vinisud Asia last year and the increasing demand of Olive Oil during our wine fair.
    SudOlive Asia takes place in the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center from the 29th to the 31st of October 2014 in Shanghai, at the same time and place as Vinisud Asia.   • Four international food industry events you can't miss

    ICEX Spain Trade and Investment has published on its agenda section four promotional activities for the food industry to be held from September to December this year in Vietnam, Turin (Italy), Hangzhou (China) and Tokyo (Japan).

    Four international events you can’t miss

    The first of these initiatives will take place in Tokyo from 16 to 19 September. Specifically, the Spain’s Commercial Office in Tokyo (with the collaboration and support of ICEX) will organize an exhibition area in Spain Gourmet Trade Fair Tokyo 2014 aimed at companies in the olive oil, cheese, ham and Iberian ham sector.

    The aim of this exhibition is to facilitate contact of the Spanish companies with japanese importers and distributors in order to enter or expand their distribution of gourmet products in this market.

    Subsequently, from 23 to 24 September the Chinese city of Hangzhou will host the exhibition Open Day Hangzhou aimed at companies in the olive oil sector and table olives, cheeses, wines with PDO, canned vegetables, Iberian ham and other cured, canned seafood, cookies and specialty food products.

    This meeting, which is part of the China Plan 2014, is particularly focused on operators that already have a presence in the Chinese market, and want to take this opportunity to promote their products in the capital of the Province of Zhejiang. Its aim is to promote the Spanish presence in the Chinese cities with the greatest potential for development.

  • The IOC at the Fancy Food Show in New York, from 29 June to 1 July

    The Summer Fancy Food Show will be coming up soon in New York City, from 29 June to 1 July.

    North America’s largest speciality food and beverage show brings together 2 400 companies from 80 countries who will be exhibiting some 180 000 products.

    More and more olive oil producers from IOC member countries are opting to be present at this renowned international event, which also congregates influential chefs and leading experts in a slate of panel discussions, talks and demonstrations.

  • Olive oil powder, one of the food innovations present in Salimat Food Show 2014

    The 18th Atlantic Food Show, Salimat 2014, to be held in parallel with the Galicia’s Green Week Exhibition from tomorrow until June 15, will in its Alinova area accommodate 50 innovative food products, including oil olive powder.

    This area dedicated to innovation, which will be displayed during Salimat, will be a major showcase for exhibitors, allowing them to highlight their new products to both professionals of the industry and consumers. So in this space, about thirty companies will display exclusive products, some of which will be presented worldwide in the market for the first time in this Fair.

    As the organizers have informed, among the olive sector, an olive oil powder will be presented, as well as other olive juices in spray or “bag in box”, a variety of “first day of harvest” EVOOs and other new brands.

    Also many drinks will be displayed in this exhibition, including walnut or elderberry (bush) liquor; “mojito” rice pudding or tangerine creams; and green tea “brut” cider, the first sparkling wine produced in Galicia.

    Gourmet preserves and crafts will also be present, being the visitors able to taste stuffed peppers with wild chanquete sauce and crab foie gras.
