  • The 2nd Gourmet Olive & Delicacies Exhibition in Greece

    The 2nd Gourmet Olive & Delicacies Exhibition which took place in Thessaloniki, Greece on May 5, 6 and 7 came to a successful end, confirming for the second consecutive year that Gourmet is an exclusive exhibition.

    Over three hundred fine foods and natural personal care products of seventy two artisan Greek producers were showcased in a three-day festive Gourmet exhibition. Extra virgin olive oils, olives, honey, jams, chutneys, spreads, sauces, cheese, spoon sweets, chocolates, herbs, nuts, cookies, handmade pasta, spirits, oils, soaps and many more natural personal care products, aromatic plant syrups, olive oil and balsamic pearls, premium mushroom products, all from dynamic businesses earn a place in the Greek specialty food basket for the world-wide consumer.

    International buyers, local wholesalers, restaurant owners, delis, hotel professionals and the public had the opportunity to discuss with the producers at length learning about their products and their history, tasting and enjoying traditional and innovative foods.  Commercial visitors participated in a series of select interactive activities, in order to further master the special characteristics and uses of each type of product exhibited. Master Classes, presentations and tastings especially designed for business audiences and food journalists, included Products which travel, Macedonian Land, New Applications, Locally-sourced Production, and Vegetarian Diet. A seminar on making soaps and cosmetics with edible materials attracted the attention of the public. Thehe Mentoring Corner, where professional personal advice to exhibitors and buyers alike were offered to all interested parties was a great success. Finally, all visitors were eligible to sign up for a session at the Olive Bar professional tastings, or the Chef Shows where famous professionals demonstrated new and exciting recipes.

    The 2nd Gourmet Olive & Delicacies Exhibition attracted the media and a great number of journalists from Northern Greece as well as Athens covered the event in person.

  • World Olive Oil Exhibition 2017

    The World Olive Oil Exhibition will be held on the coming 29th and 30th of March at Madrid’s IFEMA

    Juan Vilar will give a speech titled “New producing areas of olive oil: Micro and macro-environmental strategies” on the 29th of March 2017.

    Juan Vilar (Chilluévar, 1970) is a strategic advisor with a PhD in Economy, a permanent professor at the University of Jaén and an international expert in the Olive Oil Economy. Within his extensive professional career, he has been part of several management boards, as well as having held diverse executive positions in multinational areas. He has published more than 350 scientific and educational contributions, among which books, articles and lectures across the globe.

    What key points are going to be dealt with during the speech?

    A tour through the current situation of the international olive growing will be addressed, with a particular focus on the macro-environment. We will bring to light the most significant facts regarding consumption, and we will analyze each and every producing country from this point of view. In addition to this, we will tackle the data in the field of production; and subsequently we will analyze the expansion of olive growing over the past 15 years, as well as the challenges and future strategies considering the type of growing and the category of produced olive oil, which will be both examined as elements of the micro-environment. In essence, a more than detailed summary, about what has happened, is happening and will happen in the years to come within the sector, will be presented, both from an international context point of view and the organizational field point of view. Weak points and strategies to counteract them will be tackled.

    What do you consider the key challenges for the future of olive oil in Spain?

    From the olive oil point of view, Spain is a particularly rich country. The development undertaken over the past 25 years can be seen in areas such as technology, knowledge, the provision of resources devoted to oil mills, the quality of our olive oils, productivity of olive trees, and the quantity of exports among others. All these aspects make Spain the undisputed leader. However, regarding olive growing, the biggest challenge that faces Spain is the lack of competitiveness of the olive oils, mainly due to the dominant type of crop –the traditional olive growing–, amplified by the immobility that prevailed in certain areas over the last years.

    Which are currently the most promising markets in olive oil production?

    From a global perspective, more than 83% of the produced olive oil is consumed by the countries which produce it: meaning that it is a product that is consumed by familiarity. And although the demand spreads across 174 countries, during the few last years there has been a fall in domestic consumption in countries such as Spain, Italy, Greece or Tunisia. This situation gives way to the expansion of exports to be affected by a fall in prices, due to an excess of competitiveness between those countries involved. It is particularly necessary to encourage domestic consumption, urgently and in a coordinated way, within the said countries, whose current total surplus exceeds a million tonnes. At the same time, of course consumption has to be promoted in the emerging countries.

    What importing countries do you think are going to play a key role in 2017?

    Undoubtedly: the United States, which is still ranked as world’s third olive oil exporting country. And we should also pay attention to countries such as Brazil, Arabia, China or India (these last two countries make up, after all, 35% of the world’s current population) among others; without overlooking the major role of Italy within the Spanish exporting balance of payments.

    Yourself, who usually participates in the WOOE, what do you expect from the fair in its sixth year?

    During each and every one of the past exhibitions of which I had the opportunity to attend –and this one is the fifth one–, the following exhibition improved in image, resources, attendance, customer traffic, media presence, etc. to the previous one. Helped by the current situation of the sector and taking into account the efforts that the organizers are carrying out, on this occasion I am absolutely certain that this year will be an unprecedented great fair at all levels; of course until the next one.

    The World Olive Oil Exhibition, which will be held on the coming 29th and 30th of March 2017 at Madrid’s IFEMA, offers the best opportunity to stimulate an increasingly global market.     1. IOE had been successfully held for ten editions, attracts most excellent oversea and domestic edible oil and olive oil manufacturers, importers and exporters, agents and distributors participate, has been recognized the largest, most professional, most authoritative edible oil industry exhibition. After so years accumulation, the organizing committee have a huge database of professional audiences, organizers invite the visitors by multiple methods like phone call, SMS, email, etc.
    2. One of the IOE organizers, Chinese Cereals and Oils Association Oil and Fat Processing Sub-Association (CCOA) is an affiliated institution of State Administration of Grain (SAG). CCOA has more than140 group members, which is the national authority academic organization for edible oil industry in China. CCOA take “Service develope the association” for the purpose, help enterprise utilize new technology and advanced management mode, promote industry international communication, and promote the healthy development of industry.
    3. From 2014, The International Olive Oil Council support the exhibition as a guilder to held conference and activities to standardize the China olive oil market with IOE organization, our aim is to provide the most professional platform for the oversea olive oil manufacturers and exporters, and set up the international standard of high quality olive oils in China market.
    4. Exhibition centre introduction: China Import and Export Fair Complex(Pazhou Exhibition Centre) covers a total area of 1,100,000 square meters which is the largest exhibition centre in Asia, with the most advanced facilities, highest level, satisfying the large international commodities fair, large trading exhibition which need the comprehensive, multifunctional, high standards. Pazhou exhibition hall is the new image of the city and is one of the landmark building and tourism scenic spots, has the complete supporting facilities and convenient transportation.
    5. IOE has received the support from Guangdong Foreign Economic and Trade Office, Guangzhou Foreign Trade Bureau and Municipal People’s Government and relevant departments.     This year we are taking The Australian National Olive Industry Conference and Trade Exhibition to beautiful Geelong Victoria. Geelong is an affordable destination that is easy to drive to. Geelong is 101km from Melbourne airport and 21.6kms from Avalon Airport.   • Domina International Olive Oil Contest Results

    Vinar Argentina SA and Italian expert taster and Antonio G. Lauro organized between 13 and 17 May in Palermo (Italy) the Domina International Olive Oil Contest (D-IOOC), founded in order to promote and develop the sector of high quality extra virgin olive oil with the aim of combining olive oil and healthy eating and nutrition and to inform consumers about the health benefits.

    The competition received 327 oils from 21 countries and counted of a jury of 16 experts from 10 countries: Italy, Argentina, Portugal, Turkey, Uruguay, United States, Brazil, Greece, Israel, Peru, Australia, Slovenia, Malta and South Africa.

    Domina International Olive Oil Contest (D-IOOC), brought together many events into one. Besides the competition, there were training sessions, an international conference, guided tastings by important international tasters, and a playful side to the city that will host the international contest: Palermo; all these elements that embellish the world of oil production.

    D-IOOC contest is open annually to growers, producers, mills, cooperatives and social cooperatives and producer organisations, associations of producers, bottlers, traders (exporters, importers and traders of olive oil) and packers.

    Welcome to Olio Capitale, 10th top quality extra-virgin olive oil expo 2016 took place in 5-8 March Trieste, Italy.

    Olio Capitale, the most important Italian fair dedicated to quality Extra virgin olive oil, set to take place from March 5th to 8th 2016 in Trieste, Italy, in the magnificent location of the Stazione Marittima.

    During a year in which olive oil production is again picking up, the tenth edition of the Italian fair devoted to typical and quality extra virgin olive oils, organized by Aries, the Special Agency of the Chamber of Commerce of Trieste, in collaboration with the National Association Città dell’Olio and the Commanderie des Cordons Bleus de France, promotes EVO oil productions of excellence.

    After the success of the past edition, which has seen over 12 thousand visitors from 33 countries, the 2016 edition is set to welcome more than 300 producers from all Italian olive growing regions, along with Greece and Croatia.

    Hundreds of labels will be on show, along with business meetings between exhibitors and foreign buyers and many collateral events aimed at involving and training the general public with short tasting courses and lessons at the Olio Capitale Cooking School. All this in the heart of Trieste, a few steps from the main square of Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, a suggestive location surrounded by the sea.

    Olio Capitale 2016 further focuses its attention on business and internationalization, in order to meet with even more precision the needs of professional operators, facilitating direct contact with producers.

    World's Leading Trade Fair Biofach 2016 Awards

    Approximately 48,000 (2015: 44,624) visitors from 132 countries made sure they didn’t pass up the opportunity to come to Nuremberg between 10 and 13 February for Biofach, the World’s Leading Trade Fair for Organic Food, and Vivaness, the International Trade Fair for Natural Personal Care. 2,544 exhibitors, 245 of whom appeared at Vivaness, presented products and services to buyers from the food and cosmetics industries. In addition to workshops, presentations and tasting sessions, the programme included the annual Olive Oil Awards, where the best oils were recognised.

    The organic industry’s annual balance was also extremely pleasing: In 2015, German households spent around 11 % more on organic food and drink than in the year before, with sales amounting to over EUR 8bn according to the German Federation of the Organic Food Industry (BÖLW). More and more customers are investing in natural cosmetics as well. A general survey conducted by naturkosmetik konzepte, GfK, IRI, IMS Health and BioVista shows that over EUR 1bn were generated by the green beauty market in 2015, 10 % more than in 2014.

    Petra Wolf, a member of NürnbergMesse’s management board, said: “Vivaness celebrated its 10th birthday in 2016 and was congratulated by an industry that highlighted over the four days of the exhibition how involved, innovative, value-conscious and modern the organic market is nowadays. Natural beauty products and products created simply for users to enjoy were showcased, while expert knowledge and groundbreaking concepts were presented during the congress. We share the joy the industry takes from its success and are delighted that there was great atmosphere in the exhibition halls.

    Biofach and Vivaness Congress

    The trade fair duo’s specialist congress programme, which was both varied and fact-based, once again attracted roughly 7,000 participants in 2016. The main visitor magnets were the Biofach Forum and the Politics Forum, which had above-average participant figures. The congress revolved around the Organic 3.0 events, with the most popular VIVANESS components proving to be “Natural cosmetics: facts – figures – markets” and “Between luxury and naturalness: what moves customers”.

    Save the date: The next Biofach and Vivaness take place from 15 to 18 February 2017 in Nuremberg.

    From 25 to 28 April, Alimentaria will celebrate its 40th anniversary at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via exhibition centre with a commitment to consolidate its position as an international platform for the companies taking part. To achieve this, the show is increasing the number of invited international buyers who will take part in business meetings and other areas capable of generating export opportunities. Furthermore, this year Alimentaria is introducing new sectors based on consumer trends in food and beverages, thereby bringing together the latest industry innovations. Gastronomy will also feature prominently, with the presence of the rising stars of Spanish haute cuisine.

    According to Josep Lluís Bonet, president of Alimentaria and of Fira de Barcelona: We want to be the quickest, most direct and effective means of accessing markets that offer opportunities to food companies and, above all, to support SMEs.

    That is Alimentaria’s mission, putting all of its efforts behind facilitating contact between international buyers and the 4,000 exhibiting companies from 70 countries. It is anticipated that 140,000 visitors, 35% from outside Spain, will attend the show looking for business opportunities and to discover the latest innovations in the food and gastronomy sectors.

    Alimentaria 2016 has reinforced its international buyers programme, identifying and sending direct invitations to over 800 importers and key operators in the fields of distribution, retail and the HoReCa channel, from Latin America, Asia, the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. For this initiative, the organization has increased its investment by 35% to raise the number of hosted buyers from the level achieved in 2014.

    Notwithstanding, the international representation at the show will not stop with these over 800 invited buyers.     According to the national general administration of quality supervision & inspection, China imported food worth over 22.23 billion USD in the first half of 2015. It’s 4.2 times the amount of 10 years ago. In 2014, total revenue of the catering industry reached RMB 2,786 billion, an increase of 9.7%. 38% of Chinese household budget is for food purchases.     The Winter Fancy Food Show in San Francisco the most important and largest gourmet event of the West Coast of the United States.
