  • Milan welcomes International Monocultivar Olive Oil Competition

    Milan will be the headquarter on January 24th of a new edition of the Monocultivar Expo International Extra Virgin Olive Oil and the Monocultivar BIO International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Contests, with deadline for registration on January 18.

    This international event will count on an internatonal jury that will proceed on a sensory evaluation of the monovarietal extra virgin olive oils presented from different countries, and also value their fragrance, packaging, innovation, best company and the best juice in the world.

    The competition, first held in 2010, is the only one dedicated to the best monovarietal EVOOs around the world.

    Each sample should be sent within three bottles with minimum content of 500 ml., and it will be evaluated by a tasting panel consisting of 8 to 12 expert tasters.

  • The 9th International Olive Oil Competition "ARMONIA"

    The IRVEA – Istituto per la Ricerca e la Valorizzazione delle Eccellenze Agroalimentari and International Extravirgin Oliveoil Agency announce the 9th International Olive Oil Competition “ARMONIA”.

    The goals of the contest are to stimulate olive growers and oil producers to improve the quality of their product and to promote the harmonization of flavors through the use of high-quality extra-virgin olive oil in combination with food in the schools of gourmet cooking and gastronomy and in restaurants in Italy and abroad; to promote the knowledge and appreciation of healthful and nutritional properties of highquality extra-virgin olive oils and of the Mediterranean diet in schools of all types, particularly in gourmet cooking and gastronomy schools and in restaurants in Italy and abroad; to encourage the study of high-quality extra-virgin olive oils to increase the numbers of olive oil tasters internationally and with the collaboration of Italian and international universities and research institutes, through the organization of courses and development of educational materials with the Elaioteca Internazionale (olive oil tasting and study room) in the International Cooking Schools in New York, Toronto, Montreal, Heidelberg, Tokyo, Sao Paulo do Brasil and Seoul.

    High-quality extra-virgin olive oils of any origin, Italian or international may be submitted to the “ARMONIA” contest. The application must be correctly prepared and submitted within the indicated time frame.

    Companies should send at their own expense no. 6 bottles for each sample participant accompanied by the required documentation in the “Contest Rules” to the Award Secretariat “Armonia” – Trophy IRVEA (via Nursina 2 – 06049 – Spoleto – PG, Italy).

  • Winning EVOOs of the International Extra Virgin Olive Oil tasting Argoliva

    The International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Tasting – Domingo Faustino Sarmiento Award, held at the 4th International Olive Meeting Argoliva 2014, from 20 to 24 October in the town of San Juan (Argentina), awarded several EVOOs from Spain, United States, Argentina and Uruguay in two categories: Artisanal and Industrial.

    As organizers have pointed out, “this is the most important event in South America,” which also ranks third in the ranking of the different international oil competitions selected by The World’s Best Olive Oils project for the campaign 2013/14.

    In this edition, 94 samples were evaluated by the Catholic University of Cuyo Tasting Panel along with an international jury.

    Argoliva 2014 took place in different stages of the town of San Juan, and as in previous years included various activities around the oil and its consumption such as the Gourmet Competition “Unpublished uses of olive oil in sweet and savory dishes,” the “Open Kitchen Classes”, Business rounds, the 6th Update CREA Meeting and Argoliva Festival.

  • EVOO competition winners of SOL d'Oro Southern Hemisphere

    Several extra virgin olive oils from Argentina, Chile, South Africa and Uruguay have been awarded in the first edition of the SOL d’Oro Southern Hemisphere, while different olive juices from Australia and Peru have received Honorable Mentions in the contest led by the Chile Tasting Panel Association and supported by the Ministry of Agriculture in this country and the Imagen Foundation of Chile.

    The contest, held in Santiago de Chile between 29th September and 2nd October, received a total of 70 samples of extra virgin olive oil from six countries, which were tasted by a panel of experts from Italy, Spain, Greece, United States, Argentina and Chile who chose the winners through a “rigorous” selection process.

    “We wanted to impress the jury with olive oils from the Southern Hemisphere and certainly we succeeded. We are very pleased with the number of samples and the quality of them in this first edition,” said Joseph Mingo, president of Chile Tasting Panel Association.

  • Australian olive oil producer named EVOO Champion of show

    Victorian olive oil producer, Cobram Estate has been awarded Champion Extra Virgin Olive Oil of show at both the Sydney and Melbourne Royal Fine Food Awards this year.

    Adding to the already impressive list of accolades that Cobram Estate has earned across its Australian Extra Virgin olive oil range, the company’s Light flavour won the coveted Champion of Show trophy in Sydney earlier this month, and then took out the Melbourne title last night.

    The double win is believed to be an Australian first.

  • New Zealand’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards 2014

    Entries in New Zealand’s most prestigious competition for extra virgin olive oil closed on September, with a new record of almost 100 entries received.

    The 2014 New Zealand Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards have attracted entries from all of the major olive growing regions across the country.

    The Awards judging will be carried out at Massey University’s specialist food tasting laboratory at their Albany Campus from 22nd comprises six trained and experienced international and New Zealand olive oil tasters.

    The Head Judge is Franca Camurati from Italy, complemented by Jenny Birrell and Trudie Michels from Australia and Raffaela Delmonte, Rachel Costello and Rachel Priestley from New Zealand. All of the judges are formally trained olive oil tasters and very experienced as The Awards Dinner will be held at Parliament Buildings, Wellington on Saturday 4th at which the award winners will be announced. The premium awards are the Best in Classes, Best Boutique and Best in Show. There is also special awards for Best Label and Best Processor.

  • International EVOO Savantes programme will be held in Spain

    The next International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Savantes programme will be held at Hotel Fontecruz Toledo, in Toledo (Spain) on 24th-26th September, where many samples of the world’s best EVOOs will be able to try and participants will have the opportunity to discuss about the current market situation, the health benefits of olive juice and its culinary uses and quality standards.

    According to the organizers, Since 2001 Extra Virgin Olive Oil Savantes, which emphasises commercial reality, has held over 40 olive oil tasting programmes in many countries. During this time the three-day programme has evolved into one of the world’s leading independent forums for the commercially important attributes of extra virgin olive oil.

    Specifically, during this time, this three-day activity will enable participants to:

    • Taste the wide range of styles and flavour of extra virgin olive oils from many regions around the world;
    • Taste current international award winners from the northern and southern hemispheres;
    • Practice blending skills; Evaluate by comparison the extra virgin olive oil they produce or supply;
    • Discuss market trends in producing and importing countries;
    • Be up to date with current quality standards and the debate around new testing methods; Explore the culinary and health selling points of extra virgin olive oil;
    • Make friends and expand commercial networks worldwide; and Achieve recognition of one’s own tasting ability and knowledge by becoming an Associate Savante or Member of the Register of Extra Virgin Olive Oil Savantes.

    The student’s Skills as tasters will also be assessed and participants will take a tour through the classic EVOOs in the different productive olive regions.

    Olive Oil producers, Chefs, Food Bloggers and Foodies will work together to discover the very best Olive oils from the Southern Hemisphere & bring them together on the plate.

    This internationally accredited competition is now in its third year and is open to all small and independent producers of Olive Oil in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

    ARMONIA is the only Olive Oil competition that encourages chefs, cooks, enthusiasts and consumers to expand their knowledge of “Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) of EXCELLENCE” as well as new, alternative uses and techniques for increasing consumption in catering, in the kitchen and on the table.

  • New Zealand’s Outstanding Success at the 2014 LA International EVOO Competition

    Winners in one of the world’s most prestigious competitions for extra virgin olive oil were announced today, with New Zealand taking almost a third share of all Gold medals awarded plus a share of other medals.

    The 2014 Los Angeles International Olive Oil Competition – Southern Hemisphere received 139 extra virgin olive oil entries from 66 producers. Entries came from Argentina, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, Peru, South Africa and Uruguay. There were a total 48 Gold Medal Awards, 45 Silver Medal Awards, and 20 Bronze Medal Awards.

    Whilst the Best in Show awards went to oils from Chile and Uruguay, New Zealand oils picked up an impressive THIRTEEN Gold medals, FOUR Silver medals, and TWO Bronze medals.

    Gold medals were awarded to Azzuro Groves, Kennedy Point, Man O’War, Matiatia Grove (3), Number 29, Rangihoua Estate (3), Virtuo (2), Whangape Grove.

    Silver medals were awarded to Azzuro Groves (2), Man O’War, Matiatia Grove.

    Bronze medals were awarded to Divinity Olives, Moutohora Estate.

    This year we hope to outnumber the past edition due to the great interest.   • Prize Winners and Finalists of Mario Solinas Quality Award 2014

    Every year the International Olive Council organizes the competition for the Mario Salinas Quality Award. After deciding on the creation of the Award in 1993, the Council actually launched it in the 2000/01 season by approving Decision No DEC-1/82-IV/00 on 8 June 2000.

    The aim of organizing this competition is to encourage individual producers, producer associations and packers in the producing countries to market extra virgin olive oils displaying harmonious organoleptic characteristics and to encourage consumers to recognize and appreciate the sensory attributes of such oils.

    Certification and Register of International Savantes

    During the session ‘Testing Your Skills as a Taster’ on day 3, participants can opt to be evaluated for Associate Savante status and Membership of the Register of International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Savantes.

    The taste tests assess tasting skill and knowledge of the range of styles and flavour of extra virgin olive oils from around the world.

    To achieve Associate Savante status a score of 60% is required, a score of 80% gives the participant full Savante status and Membership of the Savantes Register.

    Taster Ranking on the Global Olive Oil Database Tasting (GOOD) app for i-phones and Tablets

    Participants will be given free access to the GOOD app. Those who achieve Savantes status in the Savante ‘Testing Your Skill as a Taster’ session will be ranked 1, the highest rank for tasters. Those who achieve Associate Savante will be ranked 2. A ranking of 3 will be available to those who achieve a 50% score (15), 4 for those with 40% (12) and all other participants receiving a ranking of 5.

    Certificate of Attendance

    All participants in the Savantes programme receive a Certificate of Attendance at the conclusion of the last session.

    In front of a packed house at the International Culinary Center Theater in New York City, Curtis Cord, president of the New York International Olive Oil Competition, flanked by his judging panel, recognized the best olive oil producers in the world at a crowded press conference.
