  • Savantes North American Extra Virgin Olive Oil Tasters Championship

Participants in the recent Savantes Program in New York (25-27 February) have had a taste of the pressure expected at the inaugural North American Extra Virgin Olive Oil Tasters Championship. The Championship will be held in Rosemont near Chicago on 26th August.

The Savantes program in Manhattan New York took the usual course of familiarizing the tasters with the different styles and flavors of extra virgin olive oils from producing regions worldwide. Some attention is given to classification and defects but the general approach is that if olive oil users learn what tastes good, they will discard oils that have defects.

Another approach which resonated with participants was that when evaluating an extra virgin olive oil your opinion will impact on the livelihood of all those involved in producing and supplying it. Therefore utmost care should be taken in the evaluation, respect given to the product and only when defects are a certainty should there be a pronouncement to that effect.

As one participant commented after the program, ‘Above all, I was affected by your ethical and “no nonsense” approach to the industry, to tasting, and to relaying information. When you began by telling us to be careful what we say and to whom we judge, because in the oil is someone’s livelihood, I was touched by your respect for both the product and producer and I felt instantly like I was in the right place’.

Following the tasting skill test two participant’s achieved Associate Savantes status, Hayley Stevens Miller from New York and Marjan Symington from Australia.

The next Savantes program is being planned for Europe in late October or early November – in either southern Spain or central Italy.

Meanwhile Savantes are concentrating their attention on the Spend Wisely on Olive Oil Conference and associated Tasters Championship scheduled for Chicago, USA on August 25th and 26th. Details are available at www.oliveoilconference.com

  • Flos Olei - the Italian guide to the world best extra virgin olive oils

Flos Olei, the Italian guide to the world best EVOOs, edited and published by Marco Oreggia, journalist, critic and expert food and wine taster -with the collaboration of Laura Marinelli, also journalist and expert taster- calls, once again, the reception of samples of the best international juices.

This international competition is open to olive oil production companies worldwide. Once received, the best EVOO samples are selected and described for its promotion in the Flos Olei Guide.

The methodology of the contest consists of a “rigorous” evaluation process of the olive oils presented by a panel of expert tasters through numerous tastings, as well as the development of a sensory profile of the samples. Only EVOOs considered “suitable” will appear in the new edition.

The Guide will be published in two languages (Italian and English), and will be distributed through national and regional divisions (for Spain and Italy) around the olive sector, offering historical and cultural information, production data, variety and area protected by PDOs. In addition, each company will have its own page with the tasting notes of the EVOO and their culinary combinations.

The Guide has also been carried out in four multimedia versions (World, Europe, Italy, The Best) for iPhone and iPad.

To appear in the Italian Guide is therefore necessary to send two samples of 0.5 liters for each of the types of extra virgin olive oils produced. Other formats are also acceptable as long as the total volume is 1 liter, but no samples will be accepted without commercial label.

These parties must submit a completed questionnaire that appears on Flos Olei’s web page and attach copies of original paper labels of each juice included in the selection. Silkscreened labels should also be sent in jpg/tif in high resolution.

  • Champion Extra Virgin Olive Oil Taster Competition

A competition to find the most accomplished taster of extra virgin olive oil will be staged in Chicago, USA on 26 August 2015.

Organised by International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Savantes in association with the North American Olive Oil Association (NAOOA), the competition will be open to all those attending a major event in Chicago planned for August 25 and 26, 2015.

Tasters will be invited to undertake a series of taste tests which will recognise their:

ability to detect and describe defects in extra virgin olive oil,
    rank different intensities,
discern between different aromas and tastes, and
identify extra virgin olive oils from different varieties and regions worldwide.
Those that take the tests will also have the option of being ranked on the International Register of Extra Virgin Olive Oil Savantes. A score of 60% will accord the status of Associate Savante and 80% the status of Savante. Currently there are nine Associate Savantes worldwide coming from Spain, Canada, New Zealand, USA and Jordan.

The International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Savantes programme was founded in 2001 to provide professional development towards the expert understanding of the tastes and uses of extra virgin olive oil. Courses are run annually in various countries including Italy, USA, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and United Kingdom.

Savantes is an independent enterprise which does not accept sponsorship or support from any organisation which would be seen to compromise the ability to present objectively the full range of styles of high quality extra virgin olive produced around the world. For the courses producers are invited to submit their oils for tasting with the invitations predicated on quality, awards and differentiation.

Principal and organiser of Savantes, Simon Field said when announcing the plans for the competition ’ This will present a great opportunity for tasters from all parts of the global olive industry to assess their skills, not only in technical tasting but also in recognising varietals from other regions’.

He continued, ‘There are many tasters at all levels of the industry who are self-trained or formally trained. Now is the time for them to have their skills recognised and publicised on an international register of tasters. We also hope it will encourage those who do not achieve the higher scores to engage in further training and experience to come back next year to gain higher recognition.’

Further details of the competition and Chicago Conference will be available through a link to www.savantes.com by the end of January.

  • Mario Solinas Quality Award 2015

Every year the International Olive Council organises the competition for the Mario Solinas Quality Award. The aim of organising this competition is to encourage individual producers, producer associations and packers in the producing countries to market extra virgin olive oils displaying harmonious organoleptic characteristics and to encourage consumers to recognise and appreciate the sensory attributes of such oils.

The international competition for extra virgin olive oils leading to the Mario Solinas Quality Award of the International Olive Council (IOC) was launched in the 2000–2001 crop year in the wake of the Council’s 1993 decision to create it as a memorial and tribute to one of the most important advocates of the sensory analysis of virgin olive oil, the late Professor Mario Solinas of Italian nationality. Its chief objective is to select the extra virgin olive oils entered for the competition that display the best organoleptic characteristics in each of the categories established in these rules.

Extra virgin olive oils presented by registered individual producers, producers’ associations and packers may be entered for the competition. Two editions of the competition will be held in 2015 in order to increase the number and geographical diversity of entries.

The deadline for the first will be 29 January 2015 while the time limit for the registration and presentation of samples for the second will be 21 May 2015.
