The Duchess of Cornwall was presented with Valentine’s Day gifts but banned from eating garlic cheese by Prince Charles when they reopened Borough Market today.

London’s premier food market has spent three years as a building site due to the construction of a new railway viaduct but has been restored to former glories.

Camilla was presented with a bouquet of roses by Sharon Crane, whose Gated Garden stall began trading today.

Camilla bought a £14 bottle of olive oil – handing over a £20 note and waiting for the change – and was gifted a packet of Darjeeling tea.

Donald Hyslop, the market chairman, said: “What better place to be on Valentine’s Day than in Borough Market?”
