  • Greece will double olive oil production to offset the drop in Spain

Good news for Greek olive oil producers as Spanish production is reduced this year, a Bloomberg report says. Greece will double olive oil production in order to offset the decrease in Spain.

“international olive oil production is expected to drop in 2014-2015 and its price will skyrocket, because of extended drought periods and destruction of olive trees in Spain, but also because of the civil war in Syria,” said an international analyst to Bloomberg.

Experts believe that olive oil production will be reduced by 3,190,000 tons in 2013-2014 and by 2,550,000 tons in 2014-2015. The main cause is the worst drought that ever hit Spain and last year’s record production that exhausted the trees.

According to Bloomberg, Spain is the world’s largest olive oil producer and exporter. Spanish olive oil has a wide range of uses, such as in salads, canning, soap making, beauty products and more.

  • Rooting olive trees for organic farming

Researchers at UPM have shown good results by using products that facilitate olive tree rooting and are authorized for organic farming.

After the enactment of organic farming regulations, there have been significant limitations to the use of certain products for rooting olive trees. Researchers from the School of Agricultural Engineering and School of Agricultural Technical Engineering of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid have taken an important step towards finding solutions thanks to the “Orgánico Terrabal” product that is permitted in organic farming and can be an alternative to the most popular rooting product for olive trees, indolebutyric acid. According to the regulation (CE) 834/2007 and 889/2008, indolebutyric acid is not permitted for organic production.

Organic farming aims to obtain the highest quality products which are respectful to the environment and can preserve soil fertility by avoiding using synthetic chemicals. Organic olive groves comprise the second-most important organic farms worldwide after coffee. Spain has more than 168,000 hectares (MAGRAMA 2012) of organic olive grove, representing 31.1 percent of the total global area. Castilla La Mancha has 38% of the organic olive grove surface in Spain. Andalucia has 33% and Extremadura 19%. It is estimated that 11.5 million kilos of organic olive oil were sold in 2012. This means an increase of about 17% compared to the year before. Italy is the main exporter of Spanish organic oil with 4 million kilos.

Today, olive tree multiplication is performed by semi-hard wood cuttings comprising stems of 20 cm with leaves (Figure 1). The base of cuttings is treated with products that facilitate the rooting and the root formation. After that, the cuttings are placed into a greenhouse on basal heated benches with filled substrate trays and are watered with intermittent misting (Figure 2) in order to maintain humidity and trigger the rooting.

  • Locally produced olive oil Show in New Zealand

A trio of Blenheim olive oil experts yesterday kicked off judging for this weekend’s Marlborough A&P Show, with a lineup of locally produced oils that they said were up there with the best in the world.

Olive oil was one of the few categories that could be judged ahead of the show, with other sections like livestock and baking to be judged during the two-day event on Friday and Saturday.

Tasting host Don Cross said each of the oils was categorized into delicate, mild and robust flavors, before being put before a panel of three judges to blind taste.

The judges, Roberta Moore, Pierro Rocco and Max Currie, said picking an overall winning oil was no easy feat as each had a different flavor preference.

Olive Oil Cake With Citrus Cranberry Compote

    INGREDIENDS
    1 1/4 cups of sugar
    2 eggs
3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil and preferably G.E.T. olive oil brand
1/2 cup unsweetened coconut milk from a carton (not can), or use whole milk
1/4 cup vin santo or Madiera
    1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
    1/4 teaspoon baking soda
    1/4 heaping teaspoon salt
    2 teaspoons orange zest (optional)

    For compote:
2 oranges, segmented, and then cut into thirds, plus any extra juice
    1/4 cup orange juice
    2 teaspoons honey
    Dash cinnamon (optional)
    1/2 cup cranberries

    DIRECTIONS
    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9-inch pan with olive oil, then place a sheet of parchment into cake pan. Trace interior rim of pan with your fingernail, then remove parchment and cut a circle about 1 inch beyond indentation. Place finished circle in pan and press parchment up against sides.

    2. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar together. Add olive oil, milk, and vin santo.

    3. In another bowl, sift or stir together dry ingredients. Slowly add dry ingredients to wet and whisk until smooth. Add orange zest if using.

    4. Pour batter into cake pan. Bake for about 35 minutes or until cake is golden on top and a toothpick inserted into middle comes out clean.

    5. Meanwhile, make compote: Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat, smashing orange segments and cranberries with a spoon. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes, or until texture thickens.

    6. To serve, flip cake out of pan and let cool. Slice, and pour compote over each slice.

  • World olive-oil production is predicted to slump in 2014-15

Global olive oil output seen declining in 2014-15 because of the effects of drought and exhausted trees in Spain and civil war in Syria, lifting prices in coming months, industry researcher Oil World said.

Output of pressed olive oil may fall to 2.55 million metric tons in 2014-15 from a record 3.19 million tons a year earlier, the Hamburg-based researcher wrote in an e-mailed report.

Southern Spain suffered its worst drought in a century in the period from September 2013 through to May 2014, and trees are exhausted from record production in 2013-14, according to Oil World. The country is the world’s biggest producer and exporter of olive oil, used in everything from salads to soap.
