  • Union pour le Développement de l'Olivier de Meknès

The Moroccan city of Meknès continues its initiatives in the field of olive oil promotion and, following the establishment of l’Agro-pôle Olivier Meknès in 2004 and l’Association UDOM “Union pour le Développement de l’Olivier de Meknès” the region will count on the Olivier Promo Meknès Foundation in order to boost its oil sector.

This Foundation is a historic and long-awaited initiative by all actors and economic sectors of the region and it is now a reality since April 10, after the signing of its charter by the institutions of the city and members of this project, which will be directed by Noureddine Ouazzani, also director of l’Agro-pôle Olivier.

Its proponents have noted that this strategy demonstrates the dynamism of olive oil in this region of the Mediterranean sector and encompasses various economic sectors such as agribusiness, tourism, culture, craft and education.

  • Researchers have proven the value of Olive Oil to treat pain and anxiety

A group of researchers from different disciplines coordinated by the scientist Julian Taylor at the Spanish National Hospital of Paraplegics (HNP), has discovered the therapeutic value of high oleic acid, a modified main component of olive oil. Specifically, these researchers have proven the value of oleic acid to treat pain associated with peripheral nerve and anxiety.

Modified olive oil molecule to kill pain and anxiety

This molecule, registered by the National Hospital for Paraplegics Foundation as a patent in use has been licensed to the biopharmaceutical company Lipopharma for a possible industrial and commercial exploitation.

The study, published in the Eur J Pain journal, supports the idea that Omega 9 type fatty acids could be modified to alleviate some symptoms of psychological pain. This discovery has been done by scientists and specialists from the basic and clinical Paraplegic research; biologists Gerardo Ávila, Iriana Galán and Águeda Donato with Pablo Escribá and Xavier Busquets, from the University of the Balearic Islands, and Julio Gomez of the University of Castilla-La Mancha.

  • Extra Virgin olive oil aids prevention of auricular fibrillation

Auricular fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, affecting one in every four persons. Currently, there are no effective interventions for the primary prevention of the illness, considered to be one of the growing cardiovascular epidemics of the XXI century, and one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality.

The randomised trial of primary prevention PREDIMED (PREvention DIet MEDiterranean), integrated into CIBER (Centres for Online Biomedical Research) Obesity and Nutrition, showed that a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil or nuts reduces the rate of cerebrovascular accidents, myocardial infarction and cardiovascular mortality amongst a high-risk population.
