  • In Olive-Oil Deal, Citigroup Held Back Amid Spanish Opposition

Citigroup Inc. C -1.19% declined to work on an Italian government-backed bid for Spain’s Deoleo SA, OLE.MC -2.47% the world’s biggest olive-oil bottler, because of concern that the deal would infuriate the Spanish government, according to two people with knowledge of the discussions. Adviser in Spain Told Bank Aiding Italian Bid Wouldn’t Be Well Received by Government.

The Italian bid, launched earlier this year, touched off a squabble between the world’s top two olive-oil-producing countries. Spanish politicians leapt to protect Deoleo as an oleaginous national champion; Italy’s prime minister snapped back that the Spanish were ideologically opposed to Italian control.

The bid by Italy’s Fondo Strategico Italiano ultimately faltered, and the discussions regarding Citigroup’s role reveal the depth of the politics at work. Deoleo buys olive oil frozm thousands of Spanish farmers—a robust voting bloc.

  • Calivirgin Olive Oil Wins Gold Medal as One of the Worlds Best Olive Oils at New York Show

Calivirgin Olive Oil, an extra virgin olive oil made by Coldani Olive Ranch located in the San Joaquin Delta area of California, recently won a gold medal award and touted one of the “Best Olive Oils in the World” in the highly esteemed New York International Olive Oil Competition.

In its second year, the New York International Olive Oil Competition is recognized as one of the most important olive oil awards in the world. Judging was completed by a panel of leading international experts who tasted over 650 Extra Virgin olive oils from 22 different countries. Calivirgin Arbequina, a monovarietal, was 1 of 21 gold medals awarded to the United States in various varietal categories. Italy lead the competition with 51 gold medals and Spain followed with 27.

“To produce a great olive oil is a hard endeavor….. Ambition to be the best is what strives producers to produce exceptional olive oil,” said Curtis Cord, President of the New York Competition.

“Awards like this are humbling and a nice pat on the back for our company and family. Sometimes all of us often move at lightning speed with our heads down so it is nice to stop and enjoy what we are doing from time to time,” said one of Coldani Olive Ranch’s owners and olive miller Mike Coldani.

Olives are an annual crop and are harvested between October and January in California. Coldani Olive Ranch’s 2014 harvest olive oils are selected from the company’s 50,000 trees spread over 100 acres of pristine farmland.

“This industry has changed a lot in a short amount of time and consumers are starting to become aware of the great olive oils we make here (United States). The U.S. collected the 3rd most awards by country in the competition; ten years ago I don’t think that would have happened,” Coldani concluded.

Calivirgin Arbequina olive oil is available across the U.S. in Williams-Sonoma stores as well as online at www.calivirgin.com. A list of specialty food stores in your area is available online as well.
