Olive tree company has finally decided to sell olive oil...

After selling olive trees for almost a decade, Aaron Mount has finally decided to sell olive oil as well — but not from his own trees. Ancient Olive Trees CEO Aaron Mount is the company’s only full-time employee.

Mount, the CEO of Ancient Olive Trees, projects his company will sell about 1,000 of cases of olive oil in 2014. Ancient Olive Trees, the name of both the tree-selling and olive oil businesses run by Mount, launched the oil brand in September of last year and sold 300 cases in the last few months of 2013.

“I think olive oil will grow as a whole as people realize the benefits of olive oil,” Mount said. “That’s what inspired me.”

Olive oil producers in California have approved a state commission that will regulate grades and standards for the product.

Mislabeling of olive oil has stirred controversy, as importers of lower-quality oils have been accused of marketing them as the highest “extra virgin” grade.

About 86 percent of California olive oil producers who voted in a recent referendum favored the new commission, which can enforce standards for the state’s product but not imported oil.
